RESPECT LIFE CORNER - ASSISTED SUICIDE 6 PART SERIES

Part 4: Targets Those With Mental Health

The proposal pending in Illinois does not require a psychiatric evaluation for depression. Many people requesting assisted suicide are depressed. The lifetime risk of suicide among patients with untreated depressive disorder is nearly 20% and 75.94% of communities in Illinois did not have enough mental health providers to serve residents in 2021, according to federal guidelines.  Tell your state legislators to Vote NO on SB 3499 - assisted suicide.  Visit www.ilcatholic.org for additional information and resources.

PASTOR'S NOTE:

Thank you to everyone who came for the first mass that we celebrated last Sunday, December 1st in the newly renovated church. The last time the church had new flooring (the red carpet) put down and some work done to the statues was in 1984. Now, with the first Sunday of Advent 2024, we opened a new chapter for St. John the Baptist Parish in Piopolis or St. John's Hill (old name). Our church became modernized but at the same time kept its original beauty and tradition that the German settlers had in mind. As Bishop McGovern mentioned in his homily, our church contains old things renovated, new things, and things that we brought from the other two parishes (St. Clement of Rome and St. John Nepomucene) which became incorporated into St. John the Baptist on March 4, 2019. The sculpture of St. John Nepomucene that stands by the confessional area was brought to Piopolis and renovated in 2019. The mosaic depicting St. Clement of Rome was also transferred to Piopolis in 2019 and installed in the sanctuary area right above the presiding chair. This past year in the spirit of taking care of all church's artifacts that were part of people's faith and tradition, we preserved the beautiful marble altar from St. Clement of Rome and made it the center and heart of the church in Piopolis. From the same white and veiny marble (communion rail) our parishioner, Curtis Richardson, built under my direction a new ambo. The black rod iron motive inserted in the middle of the ambo comes from the original pulpit used in the past at St. John the Baptist Church. I found it in the attic of the school. Thank you to Jacob Wuebbels for taking apart the old ambo and safely extracting the main piece. The top of the pulpit is made from quartz that matches the color of the rest of the marble construction and this piece was donated by Mr. Drone from the countertop shop in Ridgway.  Finally, we transferred the biggest items, the pews made from oak and witnesses of years of prayers in our chapel of St. John Nepomucene in Dahlgren. Originally they were spaced in the church four feet apart (middle isle) and we spaced them seven feet apart in Piopolis church to make more space for funeral services and other celebrations. The old steel container for Holy Water which came to the conclusion of its life, was replaced by one made from ceramic and will be the only one in the Diocese of Belleville and possibly the United States because it came from Poland. All of these material things make the church pretty and outstanding as our Bishop said in his homily “a tool to lift our spirit up to God and move us closer to Christ”. We need to remember that God does not need buildings but we do to have a place to get together to worship our ONE and ALMIGHTY GOD. As we gather together for the celebration of the Eucharist day by day in this freshly renovated Church of St. John the Baptist, let us, with our prayers, embrace all of the living and deceased brothers and sisters from all three locations who professed their faith in Christ Jesus. Those churches were and are an expression of that faith which they passed on to us for our good and our salvation. St. John the Baptist, St. Clement of Rome, St. John Nepomucene, pray for us and help us all to prepare for the celebration of Christ’s coming. Amen  Fr. Slawomir
